The Tagus area to the north of Lisbon has the great abbeys of Alcobaca and Batalha and the modern pilgrimage town of Fatima.

Also in he area is the walled town of Obidos which attracts many tourists each year.

Obidos is connected to Lisbon and the airport by fast road and a visit should not be missed,

To the west of Lisbon is Sintra with many fine old buildings some of which accept paying guests but usually need a car to reach the town.

The coast has long sandy Atlantic beaches and horses and bulls are bred around Santarem.
