The first Quinta da Capela
was built in the 16th Century by the Duke of Cadaval but was destroyed
in the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. It was rebuilt in 1773 in
its present Portuguese, rural style.
A supporting wall of the old palace can still be seen, leading to the former pilgrims' resting place and the charming chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. This little chapel, which survived the earthquake, has a domed Manueline ceiling and the walls are covered in 18th century tiles depicting the life of Christ. Most Sunday's at 12 noon public Mass is celebrated in this small chapel. Today the Quinta has been converted into one of the most pleasant country accommodations in Portugal. The manor has been completely
restored and is luxuriously furnished with Portuguese antique furniture.
There are seven bedrooms in the main house, all with ensuite bathrooms except for one where the bathroom door is adjacent to the bedroom door. All rooms have a telephone and are centrally heated in winter. There is a gymnasium, sauna
and, in a secluded part of the garden, a small swimming pool. Horse riding
and tennis are available nearby.
Its location makes it an ideal base for visiting the sightseeing areas of Sintra, which has been classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the exciting and interesting capital city of Lisbon and, the coastal areas. From the area there are spectacular views of the mountains and the romantic Palace of Monserrate with its botanical gardens is nearbr. The gardens have a view across the plains to the sea which is the setting for some magnificent sunsets. Visitors may also be interested in the many golf courses in the area which can be seen by clicking here. Quinta da Capela is a very popular manor house with our clients. and availability is limited. |
